Those were the days - young and ...

God has given me chance to lead 4 groups of youth in my 16 years of teaching sunday school and leading group in youth ministry. One of the longest one is
this group (7 years for some of the first few!). In fact, we were at one time the biggest too. I miss those days and miss the fellowship. Their gifts and appreciation are still kept with me. The egg shells they made, the cards, and prayers. Anyway, they have grown much too. The first one was taken in Marina South. The second one was years after I went on to lead another group. It was at my place in clementi. Already they have grown much. One was when they were in their JC/poly days. The other, working/uni days.

Why suddenly post this? Cos I happen to meet 3 of them recently by 'chance' (God never work by chance) - Sheri, Andrew and Sean. And Meihuan and Siew Min are with me in the same cell group now.

Lord, I pray for my dear bro and sis, that You will constantly be their light and Lord where ever they are. Amen

    Christmas eves (Part 3)

    Preacher Christmas Eve
Strictly speaking, it wasn’t Christmas Eve but it was part of NUS science fac Campus Crusade for Christ Christmas outreach. We put up a musical ‘Pepper or Salt?”. And I was the preacher that evening. It was 1990. There slightly more than 200 people and 2 persons made he decision for Christ. And one of them told me he was moved to tear. Glory to God. I was so nervous!! My cell group leader, See Kheng, was very nice. She rushed from her workplace to give me the support.

    Carolling Christmas Eve
Those were the days that we practiced the carols and went to houses to sing. One year, my youth visited the Teen Challenge Youth Hostel. Once, my young adult ministry ended with a overnight at NTU staff chalet and I had the chance to do a small part in presenting the Gospel.

    Outreach Christmas Eve
When I teaching in Sunday School, it was almost traditional that I would organise my youth for Christmas outreach/party. The youth would invited their friends for fun, food and gospel. That's where Kelvin came to one of my youth group and subsequently joined them. Thank God.

    The earliest Christmas Eve
Then, my parents invited the carolers to come. One of them would dressed up as Santa Claus. He was then a young man, now in his 40s. Time flies! It was fun but stayed up late for them to come.

    The darkest Christmas eve
That was when my mother was in hospital.

All in all, Christ was there and here. And
that’s the peace and joy of all Christmas Eves.

    Christmas eves (part 2)

    Noisiest Christmas Eve
We were at Ngee Ang City when they just started. The Methodist Church had a combined Christmas carol there. We were there to befriend ppl who sat there to enjoy the concert and pass them Christmas gift packages that contain CD of carols and invitation card to any of the 16 churches then. Actually it was one of my few time going orchard on Christmas eve. I never like crowded place.

    Spot-lighted Christmas Eve
I acted as one the Magi for the Christmas peagent. And it was broadcasted on the screen in the basement of Ngee Ang City. Never like the make-up. And a re-run in church too.

    Overseas Christmas Eve
So far I had spend only 2 CE overseas. One in Turkey and another in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong we went to a church neat the hotel. Was tempted to follow them for street caroling but my mind. Why? Dunno how to sing in Cantonese and worried about getting lost. On hindsight, should join them.

    Impactful Chrismas Eve
There were 2 occasions that I remember most. One has to do with my good friend in NUS. On 22 Dec 1988, I invited him to our church’s Christmas cantata. And he opened his life to Christ that night. Another was when I shared with one of my Sunday student’s friend, Larry, after a Christmas eve service. He prayed that night to proclaim Jesus as his Lord. He is now loving and serving God. Praise God!

All in all, Christ was there and here. And that’s the peace and joy of all Christmas Eves.

    Christmas eves (part 1)

    Christmas eve is always special.
This CE, I spent my time with my family, the most important people in my life. We ordered shepherd pie from NTUC and when I collected it, I was shocked by how mini it is. Hurriedly, I got some sushi from sushi deli. And then straight to home.
After setting up the table, we held hand to pray and thank God for His love. It was a good time to remember the actual reason behind Christmas. I do hope that it will be a family tradition to pray and thank God together on Christmas eve. Han Ern enjoyed the dinner very much. Why? Sushi is his favourite. He called it seaweed rice. He gobbled down 4 out of 9 pieces of sushi.
Then, we bath them quickly so that they can do what they had been waiting for days – open present. We took pic of them with their presents. In the midst of the heap of present, only one for me and one for my wife. The rest were theirs! Then we lighted the candle and sand Christmas carols. The final song was Happy Birthday Song to Jesus. Han Ern prayed a simple thanksgiving and they got into action. Opening their presents. I really enjoyed tonight. Seeing them, my wife included, happy. I got an accordion through ebay since she wanted to have one when we were in Melbourne. She didn’t expect it.

Christmas eve is always special. Somehow, I got into a reflective mood, thinking about my past Christmas eves.

    Most quiet Christmas eve
That was in 1994, when I was in Istanbul. I stayed with my friend whose husband was working there. We went to an international church for service. And when we walked on the streets, it was quiet. No one seemed to know or care if it was Christmas. I was reminded of the first Christmas. It happened unnoticed except to those few, shepherds and wise men. I was reminded that many parts of the world do not know who is Christ at all.

Lord, help more to know the Reason of Christmas. Amen

    Which one looks better?
One of the most enjoyable things to do in life is to sit with someone you love and watch sunrise or sunset. Even if it is alone, it is still a joy to witness the splendour of God's creation.

From the rising of the sun to its going down The Lord's name is to be praised. Psalm 113:3

    N level result

N leve result was released on Monday. I never enjoy giving our results. The stress of seeing the result and the little time to analyse the performance.

But the hardest thing was to reveal the reality. And it might be a painful one for some. Their expression of disappointment, lost etc. And to tell some that they are better off not to repeat and proceed to ITE.

And there is the farewell part as it would be the last time they are coming back to school. And the atmosphere for the farewell is never a pleasant one in this case.

Nevertheless, I pray that God will lead my students in their future endeavour.

    Karis the swimmer

We went to my wife's mothers' group Christmas gathering at Ping grove on Sat. Must say it is a nice place and a nice wading pool. Big and shallow enough for Karis and Han Ern to wade about.

They had great fun, though Han Ern was reluctant to go into water till his sister and I went into water. Karis is always the more daring one. So she was having fun blowing bubbles into water, plunging her face into water and then out. At one point, I was telling son about something, with my back faicng Karis. To my horror, when I turned around, she was faced down into the water and struggling to stand. Grabbed her and she must had drank quite a bit of water. She didn't cry!! :-)

When bathing her, she accidentally touched a slug (it got into the bathroom!!).

We had a real fun time.

Church time is good today. Han Ern was wiling to go to Sunday School on his own. Encouraged him and he was happy.

    The Implication of Christmas

Jesus came almost unrecognised, without the trappings of humanpower and wealth - the very things that the spiritually blind earthlings worshipped … He knew that in leaving heaven for earth, He wasgiving up heavenly glory for human mess, joy for sorrow, unceasing adoration for inhuman torture, and the crown for the cross. And yet He came.

    Milestone

10 Dec 2005 should be an important day for Kelvin.
Kelvin is my friend, my former student in my previous school, movie - kakee.
He was one of those students who were closer to me. We went out after school for several times. Even a short trip. I even went to his house to coach him and of course, we chat a lot.
10 Dec 2005 is an important day cos it is his baptism day. Baptism, as Pastor Lynette reminded, marks Christ begining of public ministry, als marks one's journey with God. Faith is no longer private but a public declaration.
I have been praying for Kelvin since he was my student. It was 10 years ago. Almost ten years ago. Prayed for him, talked to him about God, invited him to church, wrote to him about God in email. On one occasion, he went to a magic drama in a church with me and prayed to invite Christ into his life. But he wasn't ready to let his parents know them. But God saw his heart and kept him till today. I am glad that I invited him to join my Sunday Class evangelistic party. It was there he got to know people of his age group and one of them later invite him to church. Cut the story short, Kelvin decides to follow Christ with this public and faith proclamation. He is active in his small group and serve God in various ways.
I thank God that He gave me the chance to sow, pray and trust His Gospel to work in his heart. I am convinced that he who sow in tears will reap in joy (Psalm 126:5). And in Romans 1:16, we are remind that the Gospel is the power of God for the salvation for everyone who believe.

Dear God, I pray that my friends who are reading this too may experience the Gospel of God and His power for salvation. As for those who are sowing in tears, may the harvesting come soon for them. Amen

    Great trip

I am suppose to update on earlier but I am 1 week late.
Last weekend, we went to Desaru, plus my parents. Fun but tiring. Very tiring. I think I am really old leow. Ha ha.
The bus ride was smooth going. Started with me and Karis, and wife with Hanern. It was Fun riding with Karis. We played, sing song etc. The first day is really tiring. We thot we would check into hotel after lunch. Instead, the guide changed the plan. We went to Giant after lunch. By then Karis already sleeping. We put her down on the trolley. :P
Then when for dinner, early one. And finally the highlight, to see Christmas tree in the jungle! We took a 20 seaters ferry along the river into the jungle to see fireflies lighting up the trees. It was beautiful. Hanern sat on my lap and was smiling to himself for the whole 40 mins. He has always wanted to see fireflies and he was so thrilled by it. All the backache and tiredness was erased when you see your loved one happy. By the time we reach the only resort in desaru, it was 10 pm!!
Next morning, we went for a swim and Hanern chose to pick shells at beach.
Went to Oscritch farm too. Hanern was so excited that he literally forgot about us. haha.
Karis was brave as usual, so she was following her kor kor too.
Lunch was lobster lunch. Hanern ate 2 0.5 lobster!!! He loved it!

I am thankful for the trip. My parents enjoyed their time with their grand children too. The weather was good and we saw fireflies!! God is good!! Praise God!

    Prom Nite 2005

Finally, some time to write bout the prom nite.
That night marks the farewell of the pioneers. I had mixed feeling, one of hard to bid farewell and one of joy, knowing they have indeed matured and now truly ladies and gentlemen.
Can't imagine how they would turn up when I met them when they were Sec. 1. Some didn't change much, some a lot.
I took some pic, hugged some, wish it was all, I am missing them now. (Will post them when they are ready).
Had some fun too. Escort Jane, one the 5 prom queen candidates who later won the title. I guess it surprised many. But all the good fun and memory.
I know when school re-opens, a large chunk of my usual friends will be missing. Those familiar faces, laughters and jokes.. will be silence.
Well that's the 'curse' of being a teacher - you have to send off your students. And yet a blessing. To know that they are ready to move forward to greater challenges and height.

I pray God will bless all my friends..... and remember to visit old man at school.
