Chinese-ness and Christianity
Today (Sat) newspaper Insight section have a few young journalists talk about being Chinese and Singaporean. They talk bout how their they define being chinese through their experiences and how they consider themselves Singaporean. This articles caused to reflect about being Chinese and beign Christian.
I recall how when I was young, I was pretty much against Christianity. I was then much influenced by Eldest Uncle, a Nantah grad., whom I respect much. He was much influenced by China history, communism and the idea of Chinese supremacy. So he gave me the idea that the westerners, along with their religion (Christianity), bullied Chinese. I bought the idea wholeheartedly.
When my parents and brother converted to Christianity, I was confronted with the issues again. Finally, I became a Christian. How did I finally change my heart? Next time then say.
Because of my background, I am always mindful that there are people who are like who I was. They have the misconception as I had. I know at least one student's father who think so. That's why I believe that Christians in Asia need to continue to show that Christians stil uphold tradition that are good. There need to have more interaction between Christianity and culture. I was very impressed when I was in a Roman Catholic church for my friend's wedding. The priest was wearing a stoke with the 'double happiness' printed on it. Wonderful interaction. Some churches have thanksgiving service on firs day of CNY. While for me, this year I finally got hold some chinese wordings to paste on my door frame. The words talk about God's love. I am glad to tell my neighbour that I can love God and yet very much a Chinese.
I will continue to read Chinese, listen to Chinese music and pray perhaps one day Chinese Orchestra/Instrumental from Church and for Church that play Christian music!! The indian christians could infuse their instruments and drum into their worship. Why not Chinese too?
